Chinese "qiqiaotu" - the Seven Subtle Shapes

The reduction of complexity offers incredible potential. Using only 3 geometric shapes and 7 pieces the Tangram is one of the oldest symbolic games in the world. It fascinates through its simplicity on the one hand and the almost endless variety of figures that can be created on the other hand.

Although it originated in China over 400 years ago, the Tangram only became widespread in Europe in the 19th century. It was seen as a game of intellectual challenge in cosmopolitan circles that fascinated through the extreme reduction of its forms and the complex imagery. The game perfectly symbolises one of our core activities - the reduction of complexity.

Let's be honest: Most of us find it quite hard to divide a fairly simple form (such as a square) into its seven constituent Tangram shapes. Try it - it is a very relaxing concentration exercise, especially for those of use bogged down in daily routine.

We hope you find the experience both relaxing and mind-expanding and invite you to play with the many different Tangrams on our website.
